Current Status of Continental Divide AFS, NM

I sent a letter to the Forest Service in Cibola National Forest inquiring on Continental Divide AFS, and received information provided in this little report.

The facility was used as a Job Corps Center after the AC&W site was deactivated in 1968.

The site is no longer extant, as buildings were removed in the 1980s with the exception of the water tower, which still exists. There are plans to remove it within the next five years.

The road to the site is still available for entry. There is no road number but you can`t miss it, as it`s the only paved road in the area on National Forest Service lands.

Richard Collins, who was stationed there and is on the Site Roster, provided directions to the station, which was located on the south side of the Continental Divide, just inside the Cibola National Forest, about 2-1/2 miles south of where Interstate 40 intersects the Divide. This is between the towns of Gallup and Grants. Gonzales, the original name of the AC&W site, is located just east of Continental Divide and just west of the town of Thoreau.
