Site History and Findings of Fact
The former 0.45-acre LaCrescent Gap Filler Annex was constructed by the US Air Force beginning 1958 and operated by Osceola Air Force Station personnel until August 1968 when it was declared excess and conveyed in November 1968 to the National Science Foundation.
It was transferred to the US Coast Guard in 1974, and at the time this report was issued in 1993 was used as a VHF broadcasting station serving navigational needs for Mississippi River traffic.
A 1984 inspection determined the following on the site: The facility consisted of a 50-60 foot radar tower with dish, a concrete block building of about 1200 sq ft, a bottled gas tank, power and telephone connectors, and one small outbuilding. A 6-foot chain link fence topped by barbed wire overhangs surrounds the site.
The original radar tower has been removed.
