From Nuiqsut, head northwest 34 nm to the Kogru River airstrip on the coast. Another 28 nm to the northwest brings you to Lonely DEW Station. One of the original DEW Lines sites, Lonely was closed when the new North Warning System radars at Oliktok and Barrow were put into service a few years ago. There is sporadic oil field exploration work in the area and you may see some traffic on the airstrip. Also, an unmanned "gap-filler" radar for the North Warning System is under construction here. [Ed Note: This must be old info, as the AN/FPS-124 was installed in 1994.] In any case, the 5,000-foot gravel runway is closed to the public, although you can use it in an emergency.
