Plaque at Mt. Hebo AFS

Contributed by Tim Tyler

... After a few minutes drive around Hebo, I found a Mt.Hebo Ranger Station, and the road up to the top of Mt.Hebo. The trip up the mountain took about 20 minutes, and once on top, I found 6 or so antenna sites, all unmanned un-marked as to who runs them. But I did find a small stone monument with a brass plaque, with the following inscription;

"In Memory Of Those Who Served At Mt.Hebo AFS, Oregon. 689th Radar Sq., Oct.1956-June 1979. Det.2 14th MWS July 1967 - Sep.1980"

I looked around, but found no evidence of anything that used to be up there. No old buildings or foundations. The radio sites that are up there now appear pretty new. I don`t know if you know anything about what Mt.Hebo AFS did, other than coastal surviellance radar. I haven`t researched any of the above mentioned units for thier histories. I just thought you might be interested in what was left of Mt.Hebo AFS...
